Magnesium and Vitamin B6 relation

 

Chronic stress is a growing public health concern linked to various psychological and physiological disorders. Magnesium plays a critical role in the body’s stress response, and deficiency has been associated with increased vulnerability to stress-related symptoms. Vitamin B6 is thought to enhance magnesium’s cellular uptake and may have independent effects on neurotransmitter synthesis, suggesting a potential complementary role in stress management. Although both nutrients have shown promise in preclinical and clinical studies, evidence from randomized controlled trials assessing their combined effects in individuals with low magnesium levels is limited. This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of daily oral supplementation with magnesium alone versus magnesium combined with high-dose vitamin B6 in reducing perceived stress among healthy adults with low magnesemia [Pouteau et al, 2018].

A recent clinical study found that magnesium combined with vitamin B6 can help reduce stress and improve quality of life in healthy adults experiencing high stress and low magnesium levels. Over an 8-week period, both magnesium alone and the combination significantly improved symptoms of anxiety and depression, especially in the first four weeks. However, those taking magnesium with B6 reported greater improvements in their ability to perform daily physical tasks. This suggests that while magnesium alone is beneficial for mental health, adding vitamin B6 may enhance its effects particularly in supporting energy levels and physical wellbeing. This combination works by supporting the nervous system, helping regulate mood-related neurotransmitters like serotonin and GABA, and improving magnesium uptake in the body [Noah et al., 2021].
